I have been a freelance writer and editor for more than a decade, and an archivist and heritage worker since 2012. I have been working with nonprofits large and small on everything from website development & communications, strategic planning, grant-writing, and heritage-specific management from digitization and digital preservation to outreach and curriculum resources.
From 1997 to 2007, I regularly contributed film reviews, celebrity profiles, and lifestyle features to the Georgia Straight newspaper. A selection of these published works are available online at the Georgia Straight website. I also contributed some articles for the now-defunct Shared Vision magazine. Since that time, I have written for various blogs.

Iโm a professional writer and editor with more than 20 years of experience and a knack for turning complex ideas into compelling content. Whether you need help with a report, white paper, video script or web copy, I can help you create intelligent and engaging communications that drive impact. Iโm also a journalist, with experience writing news and feature articles, producing video and podcasts and managing editorial calendars. My work has appeared in publications that include University Affairs, Smith Business Insight and more. In 2024, I won Silver for Best News Coverage at the National Magazine Awards: B2B. Prior to freelancing full-time, I worked in communications and marketing with both the nonprofit and private sectors, advising organizations big and small on communications strategy, branding, marketing, media relations and social media, as well as managing the development and launch of digital, print and video projects. Thanks to this experience, I have a deep understanding of internal processes and communications needs. Visit https://www.sparrowmcgowan.com/ for more about my services and to see my portfolio.
I have a PhD in anthropology from the University of Toronto and worked as an applied anthropologist for more than 30 years in government agencies and university settings. I authored numerous reports for government agencies and peer-reviewed articles. I was also the editor and author contributor to a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Native Studies (vol. 24, No. 1, 2004). I'm widely published in other journals, proceedings, and reports. Since establishing The Write Edit Group in 2013, I've been a paid writer for government reports (e.g., PEI Business Women's Association project reports to Status of Women Canada), policies and procedures manuals, project manuals and guidelines, concept papers, B2B white papers, grant proposals, evaluation frameworks, and information kits and products. I've also ghost-written for numerous professionals, edited theses and dissertations and scholarly works, and helped scholars turn their theses or dissertations into books. I've been professionally published by Athabasca University Press ("A Metaphoric Mind: Selected Writings of Joseph Couture," 2013; funded by the Aboriginal Healing Foundation), University of Lethbridge Press ("Health in Rural Settings," 1999), and by Island Studies Press (a book chapter in "From Black Horse to White Steed: Building Community Resiliency"). The latter publication was written under contract from the PEI Business Women's Association. I'm writing and publishing a series of books and related information products on business mentoring for the solopreneur in The Business Mentoring Solution series. I've delivered numerous workshops and webinars on the topic of mentoring, most recently a series of three webinars for the International Mentoring Association. I'm the lead editor for The Groundwater Project, a not-for-profit charity that publishes dozens of books annually that are written by groundwater sciences professionals and scholars--available free of charge to advance knowledge about and action on groundwater. My areas of subject matter expertise are addictions, mental health, health, medical, federal corrections, violent extremism, Indigenous issues, gender, culture, mentoring, and business startup. Nonfiction only, please. I'm serious. I'm enroute to certification by the federal government as a Practitioner in Workplace Skills for Success/Relational Skills training. My most recent book, "Civil@Work: Why Investing in Soft Skills is Essential for a 21st Century Business," will be published by the end of 2024. I'm really pleased to share that my 2019 book, "Harness the Power of Mentoring: How to Find and Work with the Right Mentor--A Guide for the Solopreneur," was honoured as a Finalist in the 2019 International Book Awards and the 2019 Best Books Awards.
