Introduction

About Me I am a freelance writer and policy and research manager for the Government of Canada. I have over twenty years professional experience across the public, private and non-profit sectors, which includes working in policy positions with the Government of Canada, with Policy Horizons and the Policy Community, as well as at the Departments of Canadian Heritage and Foreign Affairs; as Director of the London Arts Council; as a freelance writer and communications consultant; and in the investment industry. Throughout my career I have also returned to academia, receiving an MA, and working toward a PhD. I am a problem solver. I love to delve deeply into the complex issues our world faces today, engage in research and critical thinking, and find new ways of moving forward. I am interested in using foresight, design thinking and creative problem solving techniques to look at these issues in new ways and develop innovative policy approaches and solutions. My experience in and knowledge of the public, private and non-profit sectors and how they function, combined with my academic background, and experience in journalism, provide me with a unique perspective and understanding of key issues. In today’s increasingly interconnected world, and with the complex issues we are facing, this multidisciplinary experience and expertise is a great asset. I began freelance writing in 1999, but wound down my practice in 2002 in order to focus on my work in public policy. I am excited now to be returning to freelancing after many years as a public policy practitioner, and am looking forward to delving into areas of interest to me. Some of the things I am interested in: power structures and social change; social justice and human rights; policy innovation and new ways of thinking; international policy and multilateralism; and governance and leadership. Writing and publishing I co-authored a chapter in a leading academic publication: 'Coping with the Cultural Colossus: Canada and the International Instrument on Cultural Diversity,' Canada Among Nations (2003) Oxford University Press, and have published numerous articles. I have extensive experience writing policy documents, such as policy and research papers, briefing notes, decks, fact sheets and MCs. I have also written many newsletters, content for websites, press releases, profiles, and brochures. Education I have an MA in Canadian Studies and completed work toward my PhD in Canadian Studies. I have an Executive Certificate in International Policy Analysis and Strategic Planning from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

Introduction

After graduating from Langara College's journalism school, I began working as a reporter for the fast-paced, broadcast-oriented Castanet publication in summer 2016, where I was part of a team that broke quick stories regularly. From there, I moved to the Penticton Western News a year later, focusing more on comparatively longer-form journalism and made a name for myself as one of the top journalists in the Okanagan region. There, I published investigative scoops and thoughtful features that offered new perspectives on issues facing the city. That work won me first prize in the Canadian Community Newspaper Association awards for Outstanding Reporter Initiative. In 2018, I moved to the Abbotsford News, where I continued to write investigative news stories about the local school district and compassionate features about the local homeless and drug user community—and that latter work earned me a Jack Webster Foundation award for Best Community Reporting. In 2019, I moved to Burnaby and New Westminster, where I continued to work on a variety of beats, from city hall to local businesses to school boards to cops and crime. And my work there landed me, once again, as a finalist in the Webster Awards for Best Community Reporting. Finally, in 2021, I helped to launch a brand new outlet, Burnaby Beacon, for the startup Overstory Media Group, being part of a small team of three that built our subscription base up to 15,000 over the following-year-and-a-half. In December 2022, I was laid off from that position and have since struck out as a freelance writer and journalist.
