Cynthia Dusseault

Freelance Writer & Editor
Edmonton, Alberta

Introduction

I’m an Edmonton-based freelance writer with a diverse background in both education and medicine/health. I love immersing myself in subjects and taking readers on interesting, informative journeys that come out of research and interviews. So, gathering, organizing and presenting information; telling stories about real events and real people in ways that readers can connect with; almost fanatically ensuring clarity through mechanics, syntax, and semantics . . . I’d say that all applies to me. Since 1998, when I embarked on a freelance writing career, I’ve written magazine articles, video scripts, blog posts, corporate reports, educational materials, web copy, marketing materials, and books. The latter includes The Desk, a picture book for children published by Scholastic Canada; a comprehensive corporate history project (which included a book plus numerous other materials) for the 100th anniversary of an Alberta-based survey/engineering firm; a co-written book chronicling the 100-year history of Field Law LLP, an Alberta-based law firm which boasts alumni such as the Hyndmans, Peter Lougheed, Leonard Brockington, and numerous other well-known individuals from Canadian history, and which handled iconic cases such as the Indian Residential Schools class action, and the eugenics (wrongful sterilization) class action; and a co-written book recounting the colourful history of a key player in the pipeline industry. I hold a B. Ed. with Distinction in Elementary Education and taught in schools in Ontario and Alberta. Prior to that, I obtained a certificate in radiation therapy technology and trained and worked in cancer centres in both Ontario and Alberta. These early careers of mine fueled much of my early writing, helped me hone my writing skills, and gave me the confidence and passion to take on writing projects about subjects I know nothing about and to branch out into different media. I’m a firm non-believer in the adage “Write what you know.” That is a far too limiting concept for a writer. There are too many stories to be told, and so many ways to tell them.

So for my professional experience, I have shot an extensive amount of news coverage including accidents, major environmental events, local events, festivals, and much more, but I think my best coverage event to date would be an Connor Earl Productions exclusive arrival of The Rolling Stones in Barrie, ON. Besides news, I also photograph for the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and the Canadian Airshow Circuit, as well as photograph anything that catches my eye. I also shoot video for the local news and media outlets when needed. I pretty much do a little bit of everything from aerial imagery to photography and videography, however my main coverage is local news and local breaking news.

Port Moody, British Columbia

Introduction

Based in Vancouver, Canada, I crossed a career bridge from scientist to journalist after a PhD and postdoctoral research in wildlife ecology. My in-depth science background gives me a high level of trust within a rich international network of scientists. My work appears in the New York Times, BioScience, BBC Future, New Scientist, Science, Nature, BBC Future, New Scientist, Discover, Scientific American, Natural History, Aeon, National Geographic and many others. I was the creator of Stay-at-Home Animal Dads, produced by Rotating Planet Productions and broadcast in June 2019 on CBC’s The Nature of Things. I worked on the production as lead writer and assistant director. I also worked as a writer and story editor on the CBC The Nature of Things documentary Aging in the Wild, and a related 5-part series for ARTE. I was also the creator of Animal Social Networks, a 5-part series produced for ARTE (Europe), and worked on the production by Rotating Planet as writer and story editor. A 2019 World Conference of Science Journalists travel fellowship took me to the top of the Swiss Alps to an atmospheric chemistry lab and deep under the French Alps where physicists smash particles together in the Large Hadron Collider. However, my passion for scientific storytelling is most often inspired by time in nature. I am an alumna of investigative journalism and science communications intensives at Alberta’s Banff Centre, was a journalist fellow at the Falling Walls Conference in Berlin, and held a medical reporting fellowship for a Knight Science bootcamp at MIT. A curiosity-driven storyteller, I am continuously learning and honing my professional craft.

Susan Farrelly

Prose
Guelph, Ontario

Introduction

Over a two year period, I blogged for the Canadian Running Magazine website through a bi-weekly feature sharing the journey of my goal to run 12 Races in 12 Months. The experience not only highlighted the challenges in setting this epic goal for myself, but running alongside my children became a poignant experience as I watched them grow into young adults before my eyes. Biography writing is a passion of mine, and I have been commissioned by Woodlawn Memorial Park to write a legacy story for the Remembrance Day Service starting in 2016 about the life of a local veteran. Pitching an idea to my editor, I developed and wrote a regular feature for the Guelph Mercury entitled “Fondly Remembered” starting in October 2014. The column provided an opportunity to honour Guelph/Wellington County residents, and share their life stories through the Guelph Mercury newspaper and online formats. This column was a natural extension of the two-year term of being a Community Editorial Board member with the Guelph Mercury, writing about a variety of topics. As a Hospice Wellington Board member for eight years, I had the experience of writing many news releases and articles for the organization. I continue writing legacy stories as well as travel features in my spare time between working as Director of HR for a municipal Corporation. Samples of writing can be found at my WordPress site: https://susanfarrelly.wordpress.com
