Word and image, history and art have been my intertwined passions for decades now. When it comes to the written word, I have been an editor and a journalist. I have ten years of experience as a social studies textbook editor: two in-house at Pearson, eight as a freelancer, in which I covered the gamut from proofreading to selecting primary sources and photos for ancillaries to writing textbook chapters for remedial readers. I also have 5 years of experience as a journalist in Northumberland County, Ontario, where I wrote and took photos for the (now defunct) News Now Network. During that time, I covered local culture (such as interviewing local artists), events (taking photos of things like Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny), and politics (covering local council meetings and interviewing the local MP and MPP). Then there’s my teaching experience. I taught Latin for a year at Pulaski Academy in Little Rock (putting that Medieval Studies degree to use!). Then I was a contract faculty member at York University in Toronto for five years, teaching in the Humanities and History departments – using my editorial experience to help students improve their writing skills. My photographic interests started long before I was a journalist: I have been a fine art and commercial photographer for fourteen years. Letters home from summer camp at age nine launched my writing career. Curious and observant about almost everything, my mundane and everyday experiences often assemble into captivating tales; much like letters home from camp. My first professional publication was in 1980. Since then, I have been a freelance writer, journalist, and I am currently finishing a novel. The focus of my writing is sacred words and music, through essays, and my Spiritual Care Counselling practice. I am the creator of the Write From The Heart™ independent writers workshops, producing two anthologies of collected works written by participants. My writing awards include: the 2021 and 2020 Mensa Canada Literary Contest for Short Stories, and a 2009 John Howard Award for Poetry.

I received the Dean’s Award of Excellence for teaching from the Faculty of Media and Information Studies in 2022, 2020, 2018, 2015 and 2013. I’ve been given the University Students Council Teaching Awards of Excellence eight times since 2004. I’ve also taught at Western’s Continuing Studies Program since 1991. I’ve been a member The Professional Writers Association of Canada and the Canadian Freelance Guild for 35 years. I’m also a long-time member of The Writers’ Union of Canada.
