As part of an innovative partnership, one agency's writers exclusively created the copy for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario's soon-to-be-released magazine, Whisky Rocks. The Canadian Writers Group is the LCBO's copy partner for the 40-page magazine, which will be distributed across Ontario on October 22 in the Globe and Mail, National Post, and Toronto Star. Whisky Rocks is part of a larger campaign that runs to November 5 and includes a benefit concert, an online music competition, and a special whisky selection at LCBO stores.

The magazine, designed by Parcel Design and edited by CWG's Derek Finkle, features interviews with Canadian rock star Ian Thornley and Dragon’s Den judge Kevin O’Leary and includes product profiles, cocktail recipes, and food pairings. The CWG writers who contributed to the publication are Jason Anderson, Leslie Anthony, Shaugnessy Bishop-Stall, Andrew Braithwaite, Andrew Clark, David Eddie, Don Genova, Robert Hercz, Denis Seguin, Jay Somerset, and Olivia Stren. For similar publications in the past, the LCBO had worked with a small pool of writers, so working on Whisky Rocks with a dozen CWG writers, most of whom they hadn't worked with before, was a significant departure. CWG is working with the LCBO on another magazine for spring 2012.

This spring, CWG became the Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario's official content sponsor, reaching out to 2,000 design firms across the province. For the agency, Whisky Rocks presents an opportunity to showcase its writers, and demonstrate what they can do, to partner organizations. Says Finkle: "What the Whisky Rocks magazine has shown to a large client such as LCBO is that the Canadian Writers Group isn’t just a great way to find one talented writer; clients are a phone call away from landing a dozen talented writers, all of whom have the appropriate expertise and can turn a large project around quickly."

A guest post by Daniela DiStefano The Toronto Chapter of the Professional Writers Association kicked off its 2011/2012 Professional Development Series Wednesday night at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre with the season’s first seminar, “Getting Yes: How to Pitch Stories to Editors.” Chapter president Jaclyn Law hosted the panel of…
A week ago, Demand Media emailed its so-called "army of freelancers" to let them know why it was offering fewer writing assignments for its sites, including eHow.com. In the email, which is posted in full here on Business Insider, Demand says now that there's a huge backlog of stories on eHow, it is shifting its focus to "more targeted categories"…
I was at a professional development seminar the other day and doing the  usual networking thing with fellow freelancers. When it came time to exchange contact info, I began to frantically look for a pen and paper. (As an economy measure I'm currently still operating cellphone-less.) One of my new-found colleagues calmly took out his business card…
Do you freelance at the Toronto Star or The Grid? There have been talks between the Canadian Writers Group/Canadian Media Guild and the Star's senior management about the new freelance agreement at the paper, which contains a couple of, in our view, unnecessary and troublesome clauses. The most recent meeting took place in late August, and…
Some journalists clam up when their work wanders into the realm of sexuality. What's the right language to use? Where is the line between lewdness and frank discussion in sex-related stories? Others, meanwhile, want to become sex specialists but don't know how to break into the market. To help journalists navigate these issues and others, Jon…
Yesterday in Ottawa, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages James Moore and Minister of Industry and Minister of State (Agriculture) Christian Paradis spoke to the media about their plan to fast-track Bill C-11, the Copyright Modernization Act, and have it passed by the end of the year. The act is, according to many, a long overdue…
Starting next month and running until next May, PWAC Toronto is hosting a series of evening seminars for writers, focusing on professional development topics such as alternate revenue sources, health and science writing, and narrative non-fiction. After the 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. seminars, which will take place either at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community…
Late last month, Quebec Culture Minister Christine St-Pierre voiced her support for a "professional journalist" status in Quebec. Reaction from journalists (and from us) was predictably negative. For freelancers especially, the designation would block too many from accessing important sources in government. Some suggested it was an attack on…
