We’re delighted to announce that we’re open to Inklings submissions from 1st to 31st August.
The Inklings is a series of pocket-sized pop culture books that introduce readers to a wide range of topics they might only have an inkling about! You can see examples on our dedicated Inklings page.
We are looking for compelling narrative non-fiction, with writers able to present topics they are close to or have a special interest in, whether professionally or personally. We are open to anyone who has something fresh and interesting to say or share, and who can write with impact and communicate their perspective clearly. We’re looking for books that marry deeply personal writing with cutting-edge cultural analysis.
We are interested in seeing pitches that address culture and its impact; individual cultural figures from a new perspective; social issues; expressions of identity; and the climate crisis and environmental issues.
We especially encourage submissions from writers of colour; writers who identify as queer; disabled and neurodivergent writers; writers from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds and those from other marginalised groups.

Since the workload isn’t getting any lighter, I would like to extend an occasional invitation and/or plea to you to take some of it on: If there is a case you want to unpack, a trend you want to highlight, a nominee you want to scrutinize, or just something happening in the law-adjacent world that makes you upset, you can send Balls & Strikes your pitches anytime at—you’ll want to write this down, it’s complicated—pitches@ballsandstrikes.org. You can find more detailed submissions guidelines here, but I will spoil the most important part: For essays of about 1,000 words, we typically pay $500. Why go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather this summer when you can get paid to write about the worst people on earth instead?

Religion News Service (RNS) and Interfaith America are pleased to announce the Religion Journalism Fellowship is returning for its fifth year. This fellowship, which will run from September 2025 to May 2026, helps future religion news journalists develop their awareness of the impact of faith on politics and culture by deepening their understanding of religious expression and building skills specific to covering belief, spirituality, interfaith cooperation and civic pluralism in America.
“In each of the four years of this fellowship, we’ve seen the fellows sharpen their skills and gain confidence as reporters as they tackle topics that interest them deeply and provide real narrative challenges,” says Paul O’Donnell, editor-in-chief at Religion News Service. “Anyone interested in religious journalism, or who just wants to add an awareness of religion to their current storytelling scope can benefit from this program.”
The 2025-26 fellowship builds on the success of the four previous reporting cohorts, in which more than two dozen stories by 15 fellows appeared on RNS, Interfaith America Magazine and in RNS subscriber publications.

📣 Call for Pitches: “The Moment I Knew I Had to Make Writing My Job”
💰 $1/word | 500 words | Published on the GuestStack column here at ✍️ Make Writing Your Job
You know the moment.
Maybe it was staring down your 86th rejected job application.
Maybe it was your boss calling you “chatty” in a Zoom performance review.
Maybe it was after your first paid piece — $200 to write about composting toilets, and suddenly? You believed.
We’re looking for personal essays about that electric, uncomfortable, defiant, or joyful moment when you realized:
I’m not doing this anymore. I’m going to be a writer.
Whether you’ve built a six-figure freelance business or are still chasing your first byline, we want the real story of how you crossed the threshold. Not the polished version — the messy, mundane, magnificent truth.
What we want:
-
Pitches for personal essays (that upon selection, the chosen writer will write a 500-word essay) with voice, insight, and tension
-
Stories rooted in your writing or freelancing life
-
A-ha moments that feel universal and yet intensely personal (specific details > vague platitudes)
-
Pieces that teach us something, not just tell us something
What we pay:
💸 $500 flat ($1/word for 500 words)
✨ PLUS: Publication to an audience of 9,000+ subscribers here on ✍️ Make Writing Your Job.

The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild is seeking proposals for online professional development workshops from Canadian-based writers to offer starting in September 2025. We are looking for ideas and facilitators who are willing and comfortable using Zoom to offer workshops on the craft or business of writing. We are planning virtual workshops.
The SWG’s Professional Development workshop series focuses on the craft and business of writing. Its goal is to offer skill development for beginning, emerging, or established writers by established writers from a diversity of genres and backgrounds.
Our interactive online workshops will range in length from 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Numbers of participants may range from 8-16 people.
In some cases, we may offer 75-minute webinar presentations with unlimited participants.
Workshops are interactive, meaning the facilitator and participants will be in a Zoom meeting room and will see and hear each other. Interactive sessions may include group discussion, writing prompts, activities, polls, breakout rooms, PowerPoint (or similar technology) presentations, or more.
Webinar presentations are less interactive – a facilitator and host will be on screen, but you will not see participants' cameras/mics. This is a great format for a presentation on a topic followed by a moderated Q&A.
We invite proposals for online presentations and/or workshops to complement the sessions the SWG already has planned. We are open to proposals that relate to all other topics on the craft and business of writing in all genres that aren’t mentioned below, but we are particularly interested in proposals that address:
Craft of writing
- fiction in all lengths and genres (including literary, YA, children’s, romance, thriller, horror, fantasy, crime, etc.)
- poetry and/or spoken word
- script writing (plays and/or screenplays),
- memoir
- comics/graphic novels, or other forms
Business of writing
- accounting and income tax,
- self-employment and incorporation,
- marketing and promotion
Renumeration for 75- and 90-minute sessions is $300 and $350 for a 2-hour session.
Preference will be given to proposals that fit the goals of the professional development workshops and are offered by writers residing in Saskatchewan who are representative of a diversity of ideas and identities. Out-of-province applicants must explain their connections to the Saskatchewan writing community in their application. The SWG reserves the right to reject any proposal.
