Attention freelance writers 📝
As the new arts and culture editor at Toronto Life, I’m looking for interesting pitches in the realm of art, design and culture. Know a couple whose wedding was both beautiful and unique? What about a person’s apartment that’s charming and off the wall? Do they collect anything weird? Basically, anything that both surprises and delights. Send curveballs, or anything else you’ve got, to isabel.slone@stjoseph.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

IFLScience editors are looking for contributions in the form of feature-length pieces on any subject with a STEM angle. We are particularly keen on features that challenge expectations, provide insights from overlooked perspectives, and have something new and important to say. Such stories can take several forms:
Deep dive – In-depth reporting on a specific subject, fact, or discovery entices the audience to want to know more.
Biographical/profile – From the award winners to those who should be better known, this is a way to talk about a subject via the work of an individual scientist.
Covering a social-scientific issue – Science cannot be separated from the society in which it operates; this type of feature aims to place it in the wider context.
Topical – Stories can mark a specific international date with STEM relevance, or be tied to time-specific/seasonal occurrences.
Opinion – Make a case or take a stand on a particular issue within a science context.
Please note - Specific papers/new studies are usually covered by our staff writers. Our journalists have ready access to press sites and journals and we generally do not accept pitches pertaining to individual studies. However, we do accept pitches on pre-print papers or on upcoming research that has been shared by researchers in interviews.
This guide pertains to editorial content only. Authors need to declare potential conflicts of interest. We don’t accept promotional content. For sponsored content or Custom Content Services please see here.

A successful pitch will provide a description of your story; evidence of original research; intended approach, format, and length; and why you are the best person to write the article. Please include samples of previous work as attachments or as links.
Online essays and features published at thewalrus.ca are differentiated from those published in print by their timeliness. They maintain the same quality of originality, reporting, and language. Every commission published by The Walrus is fact checked.
Pitches for fiction, poetry, and art should be included as attachments. We also only consider completed drafts for memoir, fiction, and poetry.
Before sending a pitch, make sure your story idea hasn’t already been covered by The Walrus already or recently.
Please note in your pitch if the story is being submitted to other publications simultaneously.

Writing and Editing, Food, Journalism
The Food Section is actively seeking freelance contributors to add their voices to the newsletter’s mix, with a particular emphasis on reported stories that reflect the diversity of the South. We pay $1,084.61 for a feature story, which runs about 1200 words. While we typically don’t cover expenses, if you need 50 bucks in gas money to cover something thoughtfully and thoroughly, we’re open to those conversations.
In terms of topics, the only real limitation is geographical. Just about every story has a food angle, but for The Food Section’s purposes, that story must unfold in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia (or the northernmost reaches of Florida, which The Food Section claimed because of its sunshine laws—which ought to tip you off that The Food Section is fond of stories with hard news hooks and corroborating data.)

All pieces will be published on our Substack first and later on our main website.
A good example of recent essays that we have published can also be found here.
The enthusiasm of the film community has excited us, inspired us, and continues to help us grow. We welcome pitches from new voices and past contributors, but before you pitch to editorial@filmdaze.net, here are a few tips to give your pitch the best possible chance:
(Note: We are not currently looking for any new staff/regular contributors, so unless it concerns festival coverage, please only pitch us one-off pieces. We are not interested in reviews for films/series that have already been released).
We commission most of our festival coverage and general reviews from current staff/regular contributors, so please do not pitch us festival coverage/ reviews unless you see it on our call list.
We are mainly interested in publishing long-form reads on 2023 releases and reviews on 2024 films.
$25 for reviews
$50 for all essays and features Substack (articles, essays, think pieces, listicles, and more.) Substack Pieces will be behind a 2-3 month paywall before being free to read to everyone on our official site (Authors will have access to their pieces to share.)
$60 for Interviews
Festival Coverage TBD
Edits: $15 for reviews, $25 for anything else.
Film Daze is operated by a small group of young, diverse individuals. The more funds we receive, the more we can pay our writers and editorial staff.

We explain the news, politics, and culture through reportage, analysis, commentary, interviews, and essays with an anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist lens. Our contributors are organizers, experts, and cultural workers who see the world as it is and know the point is to change it.
Good stories for Grassroots Thinking explain social phenomena. Great stories for Grassroots Thinking have a historical and material analysis. The best stories are persuasive, well-written, and, above all, interesting.
