Since the workload isn’t getting any lighter, I would like to extend an occasional invitation and/or plea to you to take some of it on: If there is a case you want to unpack, a trend you want to highlight, a nominee you want to scrutinize, or just something happening in the law-adjacent world that makes you upset, you can send Balls & Strikes your pitches anytime at—you’ll want to write this down, it’s complicated—pitches@ballsandstrikes.org. You can find more detailed submissions guidelines here, but I will spoil the most important part: For essays of about 1,000 words, we typically pay $500. Why go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather this summer when you can get paid to write about the worst people on earth instead?

You've reached the pitch form for both HuffPost Family and Relationships. Here's the place to pitch each of your stories (please do not email!) — try to give a sample headline, some insight into your angle, sourcing and anything else that shows why this pitch is perfect for us. If your pitch is selected, you'll hear back from us via email and we'll chat about the details/rates. Please refrain from simultaneous submissions.
Due to the large volume of pitches we receive, we aren't able to get back to everyone. If you haven't heard from us within 3-4 weeks, you can assume we're passing this time around and can resume pitching elsewhere.

MelEdits, led by longtime editor and writer Melanie Padgett Powers, is expanding its roster of freelance writers for various membership association magazines. Most assignments pay a flat rate of around $1/word.
She’s specifically looking to diversify her pool of freelancers, so if you’re a writer from a marginalized group (person of color, neurodivergent, disabled, etc.), and you know your way around interviews, research, and storytelling — this is your lane.
What she’s looking for:
🔹 B2C Health Care Writers – Can you break down complex health topics for patients or consumers after talking to scientists or clinicians? That’s gold.
🔹 Science Writers – Deep science. Think neuroscience, physiology, cell biology. Can you hold your own in a conversation with a researcher and turn it into a compelling magazine feature for fellow scientists?
🔹 Mental Health Writers – Especially those who write for practitioner audiences. Narrative magazine-style storytelling is key.
🔹 Profile Writers – You know how to turn interviews with scientists and clinicians into rich, narrative-driven profiles — not just regurgitated bios.
