My professional experience to date, consists of twelve years of writing technical and descriptive communications and reports, regarding financial matters as they relate to the law. The purpose of most of this writing is for use at the Court of King's Bench. This type of writing, while technical, is written for a broad audience, as lawyers and judges are not necessarily financial experts. Accordingly, this type of writing provides a combination of complexity and simplification, resulting in a high level of message conveyance. In conjunction with this writing, my writing will be moving to a larger, more public audience, and will pivot into areas of greater impact, such as war, poverty, and crisis. The gravity of war and crisis became clear in 2022 when I worked in refugee tents in Krakow, Poland, and visited a refugee camp on the Polish-Ukrainian boarder. At that time, I took a number of videos, and reported back to friends and family. We started a small charity and were able to raise funds to help a number of families. What struck me at the time, was the effect of the specificity of my descriptions in relation to the videos I sent to friends and family. While it seems somewhat obvious, the better the descriptions the more they seemed to understand what they were seeing int the videos, which resulted in their increased willingness to help. Another item that came to light, was the importance of specificity in reporting, which could only be realized by immersion with the refugees. After a number of days in close contact with refugees, their needs became more clear, and assessing their needs was straight forward. The principal of immersion can be applied to journalism, where personal immersion with individuals results in accurate assessment of a problem and provides a clearer window into the perspective of those subject to the problem. Living a plight, as much as one can, makes the problem more real, and points the words and camera in the right direction. Conveying reality in a precise way, will result in high quality journalistic reporting. Writing at home in Canada will likely focus on homelessness, while writing abroad will focus on refugees and conflict.
