I've been an editor, proofreader, and back-of-the-book indexer for over 20 years. These days, the focus of my work is in fiction and academic and higher education publishing, and I maintain a strong interest in trade nonfiction, especially in popular science. I regularly work with new and self-publishing authors, helping them hone their manuscript and navigate the publishing world, and with writers for whom English is not a first language, helping them find a voice in English. I'm also an experienced trainer, consultant, and speaker on editing, whether that's training new editors (including several years with Ryerson University's Publishing certificate program) or speaking to your book club or authors' group about what happens after writing. My nonfiction subject experience includes current events and environmental issues, all the social sciences, history, biography, and memoir. I'm keen to get more work supporting science communication and have been shifting the balance of my academic and higher education work into the sciences. In fiction, I work on pretty much everything except mysteries, thrillers, graphic fiction, and children's fiction. When I'm not working, I'm a news junkie with a passion for social justice; I'm also into photography, sci-fi and fantasy in all media, and gaming. If your project needs a nerd-geek crossbreed who really cares, that might be me you're looking for.
