I'm a Toronto-based freelance writer, editor and mentor, with more than 25 years' experience. My company is Planet Word. My solid reputation is built on eagle-eye attention to detail, engaging text, comprehensive research and never-missed deadlines. With extensive experience in magazines, book and custom publishing, and marketing and communications, I work on everything from fiction and non-fiction, children's books, consumer and trade magazines, blog posts, newsletters and PR materials to web copy, reports/manuals, curatorial content and book reviews. I've created a substantial body of freelance work, with a diverse and notable range of publication credits, interests and clients, including The Globe and Mail, Penguin Random House Canada, Owlkids Books, Annick Press, HarperCollins Publishers, Toronto Foundation, PwC Management Services, Common Good Strategies Consulting, Ontario Dental Association, Firefly Books, ECW Press, Canadian Children's Book News, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Editors Canada, Kids Can Press, Canadian Authors Association, Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families, Tavanberg Communications, Whistler Independent Book Awards and Havergal College. My full suite of freelance editorial skills includes: writing (blogging, copy writing, rewriting); substantive, stylistic and line editing; copy editing; researching and interviewing; proofreading; fact-checking; project consultation/management; mentoring; beta reading/manuscript evaluation; book reviewing; book judging. I mentor novice editors via Planet Word and Editors Canada's Toronto branch. I'm the former administrative director of Rowers Reading Series; former co-chair of Editors Toronto; and former vice-president of Canadian Authors Association, Toronto branch. I also volunteer my time as a writer and editor for BoldFace, the blog of Editors Toronto; as the copy editor of CAA Comminiqué, an enewsletter of Canadian Authors Association; and as an annual reviewer for the Whistler Independent Book Awards. And I've been a judge for the Fred Kerner Book Award twice.
I have an honours bachelor of arts from Toronto’s York University, with a double major in sociology and mass communication. I also have a bachelor of applied arts in journalism (graduate program) from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), specializing in magazines. And I make time for lots of professional development. I attend conferences, workshops and webinars/seminars offered by a variety of organizations, including Editors Canada; the Canadian Freelance Guild; The Canadian Children’s Book Centre; the Editorial Freelancers Association; Yale University (via Coursera); and Canadian Authors Association, among others, to stay current and informed. I was on the dean’s honour roll while in the graduate program in journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University and was awarded the Lotta Dempsey Award for excellence in court reporting. I was also the visual arts editor for the Ryerson Review of Journalism, in which I profiled Sally Armstrong, the incomparable award-winning human rights activist, bestselling author and former editor-in-chief of Homemakers magazine.
