Virginia St-Denis

Orleans, Ontario

Introduction

I am a publishing professional with more than 30 years of experience in writing, editing, desktop publishing, and managing online and print publications. I help organizations gather and package information into useful and engaging content, which keeps their target audiences coming back for more. Having started my career as a reporter-photographer at a daily newspaper, I became a professional storyteller and plain language specialist before those things were considered essential parts of marketing and communications. Connecting with my readers — so I can understand and tell their stories and meet their information needs — has always been my priority and my passion. Readers tend to have the best story ideas. My skills, experience, and dedication to my work earned me a promotion to editor, first at a weekly newspaper and then for hobby magazines. My hard work and editorial strategy increased their readership, which in turn increased their advertising revenues. My superior organizational and time-management skills allowed me to be a one-person production team to launch a plain-language academic journal. I worked with guest editors, the editorial board, authors, and peer reviewers to ensure articles met academic publishing standards. I edited all articles for clarity and language before laying them out and sending files to the printer and webmaster. I also worked with translators. That gave me the experience I needed to become the managing editor of three medical journals, leading a team of editors, a graphic designer, and a desktop publisher. I further honed my plain language skills by transforming psychiatry research papers into media advisories, increasing the journal's profile in Canada. I am a proud member of Editors Canada, Plain Canada Clair, Plain Language Association International (PLAIN), Indigenous Editors Association (non-Indigenous member), and the Canadian Freelance Guild (professional member). These organizations not only provide excellent networking opportunities for me, but they also help me keep my skills up-to-date. I also share my knowledge and expertise by giving webinars and being the managing editor of the PLAIN eJournal. If you have written something, I can polish it, so it is free of spelling, grammar, and syntax errors, and is clear, concise, and better meets your readers' needs. Whether it's a research paper, a magazine article, or a marketing brochure, I can help. I would love to hear about what you've written and how I can help. Please message me, so we can chat.

Mitchell Stafiej

Type One Films
Montreal, Quebec

Introduction

Mitchell Stafiej is a disabled filmmaker and sound designer who lives and works in Montreal, Quebec. He has lived with Type 1 Diabetes since he was 16 years old. His films explore the potential and the political power of juxtaposition and the cut; language-less demonstrations of social change. He embraces textural images and harsh sound and often shoots films on 16mm and lo-fi technology like HI-8 and cell phones. He is constantly on the search for the ‘anti-image’ and tries to expand the notion of what can be considered cinematic. His past documentary work explored the politics of racism, hate, and religion. His first documentary The Devil’s Trap was a deeply personal and harrowing exploration of a highly secretive and religious cult. It used analog media to represent the degrading state of mind of the main character. The film premiered at CPH:DOX, where it competed for the F:ACT Award. In fiction, Mitchell destabilizes traditional narratives to create portraits of distinct moments in time. His first film Found, used cell phone images and characters filming themselves to present a family struggling with grief. His next film, the 16mm fever dream A, funded by Telefilm Canada, followed an alcoholic ambient musician who locked himself in his apartment on a dangerous seven-day bender. His next film, Waste Island, shot on HI-8, is a portrait of an irreverent and lonely Type 1 Diabetic who returns to his hometown for one night to relive his teenage glory days. His upcoming documentary is an experimental exploration of the definition of the word 'inequality' under capitalism. He received his M.F.A. in Studio Arts from Concordia University in 2018 and currently teaches film production, film studies, and art history at John Abbott College.

Darin Steinkey

Aldridge Street Print & Media
Victoria, British Columbia

Introduction

After graduating university with a degree in English literature with a minor in history in art, Darin was basically unemployable. He could write like a hot damn, but most employers were looking for a drone to push paper and live for the weekend. He and his wife struck out to Korea to teach and travel for a few years, which solidified his love for the structure of sentences and knowing when to use discrete rather than discreet (seriously, there’s a difference — can you believe that?). When they returned he didn’t know what would happen next, but he took a job with Trafford Publishing, one of the first on-demand publishing companies in the world, and discovered a huge group of people who needed editing for their books. He started freelancing as an editor on the side while he learned to produce video and audio (because words don’t always pay the bills). Fifteen-ish years later Darin’s days are filled with bits of all three mediums, which is really great. He works from his home office in Victoria.

Lori Straus

Introduction

Some people search for a copywriter because they find copywriting about as much fun as cleaning their entire car with a toothbrush: they can't stand searching for the right words to convey exactly what they mean. For others, the frustration comes from a greater force: the seismic social shifts taking place in society today. Burying myself in words is like lying out on a warm summer's day, under a shady tree. Whether the words you want need to convey an exciting sale or discuss a sensitive topic, I'd love to help. Hi! My name's Lori Straus. I'm a copywriter, editor, author (Lori Wolf-Heffner), and German-to-English translator based in Canada. I love words.
