Please note: this is a one-year opportunity
The opportunity:
You devour the news and believe in the value of local journalism. You’re tapped into local communities and you want to give the newsmakers, however big or small, a voice on multiple platforms. You listen and know that no detail is too small to get right. You ask why — a lot. You also love the craft of writing and have experience working in broadcast and digital formats.
You doggedly pursue stories and feel comfortable working on your own. You also know that news is collaborative and you want to work as part of a team to provide the best content to the audience.
You’re not happy with the bare minimum, and instead take every story one step further. You’re excited about the possibilities that multi-platform reporting offers. You may not know all of CBC’s tools but you’re technically adept and willing to learn.
In this role, you’ll be reporting and reading newscasts for Up North, a radio show which is heard across the vast expanse of northern Ontario every weekday afternoon. You’re responsible for telling the stories of this sprawling region and connecting cities, towns and First Nations that might be thousands of kilometres apart. You’ll tell the audience about the daily news that’s shaping their region, while providing key survival information in a region where the weather is far from a background character.
Working from CBC Sudbury, you bring together the biggest stories from your home newsroom and from your colleagues at CBC Thunder Bay. You begin your work day at noon to carry the news agenda through the afternoon and help set the table for the next day by assisting with radio and online content for the following day and beyond.

Applications are open for our 2025 Journalism Travel Grants. The submission deadline is October 7, 2025.
We support journalists in covering under-told stories about ways to make cities and their metro regions work better for all their people.
An ideal project for us to support is one where a journalist aims to inform a critical local debate by reporting on how a promising approach in another city is working. A great example from our most recent grant cycle is this 2-part series in the Baltimore Banner. Please read the stories and consider how your proposal can similarly help cities learn from each other.
Our travel grants of up to $1,500 enable journalists to travel to cities within the U.S. to produce one or more stories for publication. The awards, selected through a competitive review process, cover travel expenses necessary for on-the-ground reporting.
We invite full-time freelancers as well as journalists currently employed by a news organization to apply.

Dear Design Observer contributor network,
As Spooky Season creeps ever closer, we’re seeking pitches from design practitioners and journalists on The Design of Horror | The Horror of Design.
Whether you’re seduced by the scary or shy away from it, we want your take on the most chilling and thrilling ways that horror and design intersect. How can we dredge up enough final-girl energy to confront these resident evils?
We welcome art-eds, op-eds, criticism, reported articles, and multimedia work from professional designers and journalists. See our pitch guide for more on what types of stories will make us bite. Also check out some of our archival horror coverage for inspiration, and sign up for our weekly newsletter The Observatory to get a deeper sense of our sensibilities.
Pitch us here by 9/22. We’ll commission stories on a rolling basis through the beginning of October.

Religion News Service (RNS) and Interfaith America are pleased to announce the Religion Journalism Fellowship is returning for its fifth year. This fellowship, which will run from September 2025 to May 2026, helps future religion news journalists develop their awareness of the impact of faith on politics and culture by deepening their understanding of religious expression and building skills specific to covering belief, spirituality, interfaith cooperation and civic pluralism in America.
“In each of the four years of this fellowship, we’ve seen the fellows sharpen their skills and gain confidence as reporters as they tackle topics that interest them deeply and provide real narrative challenges,” says Paul O’Donnell, editor-in-chief at Religion News Service. “Anyone interested in religious journalism, or who just wants to add an awareness of religion to their current storytelling scope can benefit from this program.”
The 2025-26 fellowship builds on the success of the four previous reporting cohorts, in which more than two dozen stories by 15 fellows appeared on RNS, Interfaith America Magazine and in RNS subscriber publications.

Alberta Native News is pleased to announce we are hiring part-time reporters and freelance reporters. If you have strong writing skills, this will be a great way to supplement your income.
The ideal candidates should be able to tell the story of Indigenous issues in Alberta (and BC) through narrative and investigative approaches. We are looking for journalists who are driven, with fresh ideas and a great attitude.
Why are we seeking Indigenous issues reporters? Alberta is home to First Nation communities in Treaty 6, 7 and 8 traditional territories, Metis settlements and both urban and rural settings that have distinct and diverse needs and challenges that are being under reported. Their stories should be told.
We welcome applications from reporters of all levels of experience, but a track record of reporting, especially in Indigenous media and/or formal journalism education will be considered an asset. We value investigative skills, too.
We want to go beyond the typical headlines and explore the issues facing Indigenous people in Alberta from the ground up. A candidate conversant on restorative justice, truth and reconciliation, residential school impact and a keen interest in success stories of Indigenous individuals and communities who are overcoming challenges and barriers will have an edge.
Further requirements (the right candidate will tick these boxes):
- Strong reporting and writing skills, with a flair for narrative
- Strong interest in Indigenous justice issues
- Time management skills, including the ability to keep to tight deadlines
- Team oriented and collaborative at heart
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Please submit your cover letter and resume explaining why you are interested in this opportunity to nativeads@gmail.com. Please put “Indigenous issues reporter” in the subject line. The positions will remain open until filled.
We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce. If you’re creative, hard-working and love independent Indigenous media, we’d love to meet with you.
