The Sask Dispatch is accepting pitches for our unthemed March/April 2025 issue. Pitches are due November 10, 2024.

Broadly, we're always looking for pitches covering provincial and municipal elections, grassroots activism, Indigenous rights, arts and culture, economic justice, ecology, gender equity, harm reduction, and more. This editor would like to increase reporting on rural Saskatchewan, arts and culture, and grassroots activism.

The Walrus is seeking a full-time fact checker to join our editorial team. This is a staff position and is suited for a trained editorial fact checker with experience working in a fast-paced environment on a variety of long-form journalism.

The fact checker will primarily be responsible for fact-checking contributing writer features, along with other stories—investigative features, first-person essays, stories of a sensitive nature—as needed. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of editorial fact-checking methods.

The fact checker will also help train and mentor editorial fellows alongside the head of research. They will have the opportunity to attend story meetings and contribute to editorial planning sessions.

The fact checker will report to the head of research, and work with members of the editorial team. The fact checker should have a working knowledge of The Walrus ethics and verification standards. They should also be familiar with the organization’s educational mandate, and support the inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility goals of The Walrus.

Your reporting would go wherever Ontarians’ tax dollars go and would include strong elements of solutions and accountability journalism.

You’ll seek input from real people in communities and regions across Ontario, examining the issues and reporting on potential solutions. You’ll cover the son in Sudbury who’s trying to help his elderly mother navigate the long-term-care system; you’ll cover the father in Kenora whose child needs mental-health care but can’t get it; you’ll cover the disabled university student in Ottawa who can’t find accessible housing. You’ll cover their stories from a human perspective and hold Ontario’s many systems and institutions to account. 

Through text and multimedia reporting, you’ll provide new insights that will resonate with readers from across Ontario. TVO is a learning organization; as such, you’ll also look out for stories that can be repurposed for educational uses. This is a one-year contract position.
