What we are looking for

True stories that address an aspect of inequality and/or discrimination in New Brunswick. Examples may involve poverty, gender-based oppression, racism or other dimensions of inequality.

-Your article must feature a personal story or interviews with one or more people about their experiences with unjust policies, practices or laws.

-Your story must have taken place in New Brunswick or the Maritimes, and the incident(s) in question must be recent. (For the purposes of this project, recent means 2020 or later).

-Your article should try to get to the bottom of things, trying to answer the question “why?”.

-Completed articles should be between 750 and 1,000 words and accompanied by a photo.

-Note: We will evaluate articles involving an anonymous source or an author using a pseudonym on a case-by-case basis.

Contributor Fees

The Coop Media NB is a small operation, run largely by volunteers, but we have a small budget for this project. We can offer $500 each for up to three feature articles , with payment made at the time of publication.

How to present your article

Please send your submissions to info@nbmediacoop.org  with the subject line: “Story Submissions: Documenting Discrimination and Inequality.” We will endeavour to respond to every submission, but this will depend on the number of submissions we receive. If you have not received a response within a few weeks, we will likely not be able to use your submission.

A good proposal will outline the gist of your article project, the main sources you'll be consulting, and why you're the best person to write it. Ideally, your pitch will contain all of this information in 150 words or less.

Please note that our readership is primarily located in New Brunswick, but we also have readers outside the province and Canada. Please take this into account in how you approach your article.

Our goal is to publish three stories in this series by the end of May 2025. We will accept submissions on a rolling basis.

Application Deadline: May 30, 2025
