For Digits & Threads we're seeking submissions from Canadian contributors by June 28, 2023, on the following topics or for the following projects or series (I am also open to receiving pitches on topics not mentioned here that align with our editorial mandate to cover Canadian fibre and textile arts, crafts and industry):
- Blanket or throw pattern for a fall/winter series. We're specifically seeking pitches (sketch and details) for a crocheted blanket and quilt only—other crafts will not be considered at this time. No finished projects in your pitch, please. Yarn/fabric will be provided.
- Local dispatches from around Canada. Write up a local exhibition, fair or event, with two to five photos.
- Tutorial on how to dye quilting cotton with natural dyes. With photos and clear explanations. Fabric will be supplied, and is intended to be used for another magazine project so will need to be sent on (at D&T's expense) after the tutorial is completed.
- Reported article on fibre/textiles related to the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This could be an exploration of how clothing/dress was/is used as a tool of oppression; coverage of how clothing is a symbol (as for Orange Shirt Day and Red Dress Day, or in other ways)...
- Tutorials related to craft pain points (but not for knitting or weaving at this time). Nerdy deep-dives into techniques or situations that crafters find daunting or intimidating, whether they're difficult or not. Topics could include stitching French knots, how to make and attach tidy pom poms or tassles, best practices for tidy (or messy!) cross stitch, etc.
- Profiles of Canadian fibre or textile artists about a body of work, upcoming exhibition, origin story, etc.
- Article or tutorial about tatting and/or profiling a tatting expert.
- Tutorial for inserting a zipper + a companion beginner project involving zipper insertion (looking for sewing OR knitting/crochet/weaving).
- An article or tutorial on decorative embellishment that may or may not involve mending.
