Stories about traveling are some of the oldest tales in human history, and we’re looking for the next generation of travel writers.

We seek first-hand travel stories and bizarre yet captivating stories about your adventures. We are also open to breaking news articles from the travel industry and the changing tides that affect travelers around the world.

Please read through all of the rules and guides below. If you’re pitching for a special project, please state that in your pitch form below as well.

Rules

Please only submit one idea per Google Form entry.

Mention any sources (including any interviews) you would potentially use in this article, especially any first-hand experience.

Please include a bit about your writing and travel background. We want to know why you’re qualified to tell this story specifically.

We are open to listicles, but please keep the number below 10 items and have detailed paragraphs for each bullet point.

Please don’t pitch us completed articles but instead ideas and plans.

How to Pitch:

Please fill out the form below with as much information as possible about your story and pitch. We will review the pitches each week, and will attempt to respond to most pitches, but please note that due to volume, we may not be able to respond to all of them.

If your pitch is accepted, an editor will reach out to you to discuss the details of your pitch and the expected timeline of your article.

Rates:

Starting rates are around $250 for 700 to 900-word articles.

Special Projects:

Like a Local

Who knows a city better than the locals? We’re looking for articles and stories about the best of the best in your city or location. If you were to plan an entire itinerary for your friends who have never been to the city, where would you take them? What bars and restaurants would you bring them to? What are your can’t-miss stops?

Budget Travel

Are you the master at scoring cheap vacations and trips? Do you have secret strategies that others should know about before they hop on their next flight? We want you to share your budget travel expertise with us and our readers so everyone can be as savvy as you!

Travel Mistakes

We all learn from our mistakes, right? How about letting other travelers learn from your own? From missing flights to unexpected baggage fees to booking the wrong rental car, we’ve all made traveling mistakes that we’ve gleaned wisdom from and were able to never repeat. Let your mistakes be a cautionary tale for someone else.

Timely Stories

We’re also looking for any story related to an upcoming holiday, event, or timely situation. For example, leaf peeping in the fall, holiday lights in the winter, and the best locations to spot the Northern Lights!

Application Deadline: December 31, 2024

The digital reporter is critical to our journalism, highlighting gaps in the systems that shape the lives of Ontarians and exploring solutions. You’re driven to pursue coverage of everything from health care to education to infrastructure, always with an eye to the human element that makes policy personal. Your reporting would go wherever Ontarians’ tax dollars go and would include strong elements of solutions and accountability journalism.

You’ll seek input from real people in communities and regions across Ontario, examining the issues and reporting on potential solutions. You’ll cover the son in Sudbury who’s trying to help his elderly mother navigate the long-term-care system; you’ll cover the father in Kenora whose child needs mental-health care but can’t get it; you’ll cover the disabled university student in Ottawa who can’t find accessible housing. You’ll cover their stories from a human perspective and hold Ontario’s many systems and institutions to account.

Through text and multimedia reporting, you’ll provide new insights that will resonate with readers from across Ontario. TVO is a learning organization; as such, you’ll also look out for stories that can be repurposed for educational uses. This is a one-year contract position.
