At The Food Section, we serve eaters across the American South by providing them with the information and analysis they need to better understand and appreciate their food-and-drink experiences in our region. Or to put it another way: We break the news and tell the stories that make readers’ meals more meaningful.

Those readers are a whip-smart bunch. The Food Section twice each week lands in the inboxes of thousands of high-profile food chroniclers and connoisseurs who crave new ideas and perspectives. They’re equally interested in the joys of dining and justice for those who make such pleasure possible.

The Markup is seeking pitches for stories on how misinformation impacts immigrant communities, especially non-native English speakers, in the United States, as a part of our “Languages of Misinformation” series.

We want pitches from people who are:

Already connected to an immigrant community experiencing misinformation. You may be connected because you want to cover your own community, or because you’ve built relationships with the community in other ways. We encourage pitches from reporters who want to cover their own communities’ challenges with misinformation.
Able to communicate with that community in their native language. Your language skills need to be proficient enough that you can communicate in whatever format your sources normally use. For example, in addition to being able to interview sources verbally, you’ll probably need writing skills to text with sources using their apps of choice. However, your written proficiency doesn’t need to extend to being able to write articles in another language. (If you are, that’s a bonus—but we can also help with article translation.)
Excited to create resources for communities, in addition to reporting out their stories. For example, as a part of Languages of Misinformation, our reporter conducted an in-person misinformation workshop in Vietnamese and helped community members download Google Translate. We want to work with people who would be excited to create those resources and who will pitch them to us as follow-up projects.

To bring awareness to the crisis of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit and Transgender people (MMIWG2T), the Howard G. Buffett Foundation has given the IWMF a $750,000 grant to establish a three-year fund supporting U.S.-based reporting projects by Indigenous journalists on the issue.

Sessions run six weeks, either May 20—June 28 or July 1—Aug 9. Most classes are scheduled for 2 hours per day Mon–Wed and 1.5 hours on Thursday (see exceptions for J110, J112 and J113). No classes on Friday.

We’re open to investigations that are revelatory or substantially advance what is known on a subject of importance. The investigation should have the potential to trigger needed reforms by identifying a problem, who’s responsible and what should change. It should also clearly show harm. The investigation can be rooted in a place or focus on a person, but it should illuminate an issue of broader relevance.

The Chicago Sun-Times is now accepting freelance pitches for its soon-to-launch Money desk! We're looking for Chicago area stories that explore the way money intersects with our communities, including stories about housing, personal finance, small businesses, consumer spending and "how to" stories to help consumers make the most of their money.

Got a great idea? The Shaufler Prize in Journalism is the premier contest that recognizes the best journalism in the country advancing the understanding of issues related to underserved people in society, such as communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ and those with disabilities.

Ed Shaufler, who died in late 2020, cared deeply about promoting understanding of underrepresented people. Paul B. Anderson, principal and CEO of Workhouse Media, established the prize with the Cronkite School to honor his late friend. “Ed was a great observer of human behavior, both individually and in groups,” says Anderson. “He and I spent years just talking about journalism and stories and society. Ed loved that intellectual engagement around journalism, and I thought we should put his name to something that may have immediate and lasting impact for a journalist.”

We are DealFlow Events, a 20-year-old powerhouse in producing successful events and newsletters for professionals working in finance and healthcare. We're looking for seasoned finance writers with proven experience (published clips) covering the stock markets. The focus is on a news product devoted to microcap and small-cap stocks.
