The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism provides experienced journalists with grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories with a strong economic, financial or business angle. You don’t need to be a business reporter to apply — many of our previous Fellows have been generalists, or cover beats such as health care, education or the environment. Others have focused on issues such as economic inequality or corporate accountability.

Given the enormous changes in federal spending and policy priorities now coming out of the new administration in Washington DC, we are particularly interested during the Spring 2025 round of Fellowships in story proposals that examine the impact of these changes.

The upcoming deadline to apply for Spring 2025 Fellowships is April 14, 2025. 

We consider proposals from both freelance and staff journalists in all forms of media — text, audio, photo, and short-form video — and encourage those that combine formats to create a multimedia package. We look for projects that focus on important local or regional topics, as well as those that tackle compelling national or international stories or report on under-covered communities or issues. Journalists from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

English-speaking journalists and editors with experience working with data, audience engagement, or newsletters are welcome to apply for the webinars - the first step toward the fellowship. Journalists from all countries are eligible for the opportunity.

While reporting skills will be useful, the fellowship has a non-reporting component, instead focusing on audience, newsletter and other digital journalism skills. The selected journalist should not expect to receive bylines during their fellowship.

The GGSC is pleased to announce a request for proposals (RFP) to support nonfiction content and reported stories related to love. We are interested in projects that extend well beyond romantic love; we define love as a deep, unselfish commitment to another person’s well-being—even to put their interests before your own.

The GGSC will distribute grants of between $5,000 and $50,000 to two dozen journalists and media producers who approach the topic of love from a variety of angles and across a range of media, including articles, videos, radio stories, podcasts, social media content, and more. The grants are part of the GGSC's Spreading Love Through the Media project, supported by a three-year grant from the John Templeton Foundation, with additional funding from Acton Family Giving and Unlikely Collaborators.

In addition to financial support, we will also connect the grantees with scientific experts who will serve as advisors to their projects, guiding them to relevant research and helping them align their work with the science of love. Grantees will participate in quarterly cohort meetings online and three in-person convenings over the course of the project period.

The submission window opens January 7, 2025, and the application deadline is 11:59 pm PT on March 24, 2025. For grant winners, the project period will run from September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2027.

The fellowship offers aspiring journalists a two-year educational program that prepares them for careers as credible, non-partisan reporters in the nation’s capital or wherever their work may take them. Students learn core skills from respected professional reporters and editors in a classroom setting, and they gain real-world experience by working as reporters at AJI’s publication, NOTUS. Students are paid an annual stipend of $60,000 so that they can live in the D.C. area and devote their attention and energy to the fellowship. We plan to review applications in February, March and April, selecting a group of finalists to interview. We expect to tell all applicants in April whether they are moving on to the interview round. And we expect to complete interviews and notify finalists of our decisions in May. All applicants must have U.S. work authorization in order to be eligible for this fellowship. AJI fellows are not eligible for employment-based visa sponsorship.

Strong experience reaching sources and developing a beat are essential. Business journalism at a newspaper or other media company is also critical.

ProPublica is seeking an accountability reporter to cover climate change as an investigative beat, examining how decisions by individuals, corporations and governments are shaping life-and-death outcomes for people across the U.S. and the world.
