Since the workload isn’t getting any lighter, I would like to extend an occasional invitation and/or plea to you to take some of it on: If there is a case you want to unpack, a trend you want to highlight, a nominee you want to scrutinize, or just something happening in the law-adjacent world that makes you upset, you can send Balls & Strikes your pitches anytime at—you’ll want to write this down, it’s complicated—pitches@ballsandstrikes.org. You can find more detailed submissions guidelines here, but I will spoil the most important part: For essays of about 1,000 words, we typically pay $500. Why go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather this summer when you can get paid to write about the worst people on earth instead?

Kari Howard loved stories that left readers feeling as though they had just met a new friend. Writers fortunate enough to work with her as their editor found themselves challenged to weave the music of everyday life and the passion of extraordinary love into the fabric of stories illuminating the most important issues of the day. Kari’s family and friends, together with the International Women’s Media Foundation, are honored to offer grants to support the narrative journalism she championed.

Grants will be for a maximum of $5,000. Applicants may be a print journalist or a print journalist leading a multi-media team. Projects reported and published in English anywhere in the world are eligible. All reporting and publishing must be completed within six months of the award of the grant.

DEADLINE: July 13, 2025, at 11:59 pm EST

Religion News Service (RNS) and Interfaith America are pleased to announce the Religion Journalism Fellowship is returning for its fifth year. This fellowship, which will run from September 2025 to May 2026, helps future religion news journalists develop their awareness of the impact of faith on politics and culture by deepening their understanding of religious expression and building skills specific to covering belief, spirituality, interfaith cooperation and civic pluralism in America.

“In each of the four years of this fellowship, we’ve seen the fellows sharpen their skills and gain confidence as reporters as they tackle topics that interest them deeply and provide real narrative challenges,” says Paul O’Donnell, editor-in-chief at Religion News Service. “Anyone interested in religious journalism, or who just wants to add an awareness of religion to their current storytelling scope can benefit from this program.”

The 2025-26 fellowship builds on the success of the four previous reporting cohorts, in which more than two dozen stories by 15 fellows appeared on RNS, Interfaith America Magazine and in RNS subscriber publications.

Alberta Native News is pleased to announce we are hiring part-time reporters and freelance reporters. If you have strong writing skills, this will be a great way to supplement your income.

The ideal candidates should be able to tell the story of Indigenous issues in Alberta (and BC) through narrative and investigative approaches. We are looking for journalists who are driven, with fresh ideas and a great attitude.

Why are we seeking Indigenous issues reporters? Alberta is home to First Nation communities in Treaty 6, 7 and 8 traditional territories, Metis settlements and both urban and rural settings that have distinct and diverse needs and challenges that are being under reported. Their stories should be told.

We welcome applications from reporters of all levels of experience, but a track record of reporting, especially in Indigenous media and/or formal journalism education will be considered an asset. We value investigative skills, too.

We want to go beyond the typical headlines and explore the issues facing Indigenous people in Alberta from the ground up. A candidate conversant on restorative justice, truth and reconciliation, residential school impact and a keen interest in success stories of Indigenous individuals and communities who are overcoming challenges and barriers will have an edge.

Further requirements (the right candidate will tick these boxes):

  • Strong reporting and writing skills, with a flair for narrative
  • Strong interest in Indigenous justice issues
  • Time management skills, including the ability to keep to tight deadlines
  • Team oriented and collaborative at heart
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Please submit your cover letter and resume explaining why you are interested in this opportunity to nativeads@gmail.com. Please put “Indigenous issues reporter” in the subject line. The positions will remain open until filled.

We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce. If you’re creative, hard-working and love independent Indigenous media, we’d love to meet with you.

MelEdits, led by longtime editor and writer Melanie Padgett Powers, is expanding its roster of freelance writers for various membership association magazines. Most assignments pay a flat rate of around $1/word.

She’s specifically looking to diversify her pool of freelancers, so if you’re a writer from a marginalized group (person of color, neurodivergent, disabled, etc.), and you know your way around interviews, research, and storytelling — this is your lane.

What she’s looking for:

🔹 B2C Health Care Writers – Can you break down complex health topics for patients or consumers after talking to scientists or clinicians? That’s gold.
🔹 Science Writers – Deep science. Think neuroscience, physiology, cell biology. Can you hold your own in a conversation with a researcher and turn it into a compelling magazine feature for fellow scientists?
🔹 Mental Health Writers – Especially those who write for practitioner audiences. Narrative magazine-style storytelling is key.
🔹 Profile Writers – You know how to turn interviews with scientists and clinicians into rich, narrative-driven profiles — not just regurgitated bios.

We’re looking for a Junior Writer who creates original content for BuzzFeed's O&O and/or distributed platforms. This candidate should be comfortable taking on daily assignments and pitching story ideas related to the current celeb news cycle, as well as have the foresight to create evergreen content that serves our readers. We're looking for a real pop culture junkie who's not afraid to poke the hive with some hot takes!

Writers should have a keen eye for finding new and interesting stories happening both on and offline as well as a grasp of the nuanced cultural conversations happening all over the internet. We're looking for people who are fascinated by social media, human psychology, and trends of all kinds. On any given day, you might be researching behind-the-scenes facts and Easter eggs about a trending piece of pop culture, testing out cooking hacks, or making a TikTok explaining a viral news topic.

Junior writers will work with the local Canadian BuzzFeed team — some of the smartest, weirdest, most creative, and most viral creators out there. This is the perfect opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in digital media. You won't be running errands for senior staff, or transcribing someone else's interviews, you will be pitching ideas, taking assignments, brainstorming, collaborating, and writing dozens of stories that will be published to BuzzFeed.com and promoted across our social channels. You will also create (or collaborate with team members to create) vertical video (TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts).

This position is paid (starting at $25/hour CAD). This opportunity allows candidates to work fully remotely across Canada, but there will also be opportunities to work from our Toronto office.
