Junior writers will work with the local Canadian BuzzFeed team — some of the smartest, weirdest, most creative, and most viral creators out there. This is the perfect opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in digital media. You won't be running errands for senior staff, or transcribing someone else's interviews, you will be pitching ideas, taking assignments, brainstorming, collaborating, and writing dozens of stories that will be published to BuzzFeed.com and promoted across our social channels. You will also create (or collaborate with team members to create) vertical video (TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts).

This position is paid (starting at $25/hour CAD). This opportunity allows candidates to work fully remotely across Canada, but there will also be opportunities to work from our Toronto office.

The News Corp Media Fellowship offers international reporters and editors an immersive, hands-on experience in some of the world’s most digitally advanced newsrooms. The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism provides experienced journalists with grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories with a strong economic, financial or business angle. You don’t need to be a business reporter to apply — many of our previous Fellows have been generalists, or cover beats such as health care, education or the environment. Others have focused on issues such as economic inequality or corporate accountability.

Given the enormous changes in federal spending and policy priorities now coming out of the new administration in Washington DC, we are particularly interested during the Spring 2025 round of Fellowships in story proposals that examine the impact of these changes.

The upcoming deadline to apply for Spring 2025 Fellowships is April 14, 2025. 

We consider proposals from both freelance and staff journalists in all forms of media — text, audio, photo, and short-form video — and encourage those that combine formats to create a multimedia package. The Winter 2025-26 issue of The Stinging Fly, due to publish in November 2025, will have a special focus on the climate crisis, where we will showcase visionary, provocative, and original new work about the climate and the endangered future of our planet.
