Applications are open for our 2025 Journalism Travel Grants. The submission deadline is October 7, 2025.

We support journalists in covering under-told stories about ways to make cities and their metro regions work better for all their people.

An ideal project for us to support is one where a journalist aims to inform a critical local debate by reporting on how a promising approach in another city is working. A great example from our most recent grant cycle is this 2-part series in the Baltimore Banner. Please read the stories and consider how your proposal can similarly help cities learn from each other.

Our travel grants of up to $1,500 enable journalists to travel to cities within the U.S. to produce one or more stories for publication. The awards, selected through a competitive review process, cover travel expenses necessary for on-the-ground reporting.

We invite full-time freelancers as well as journalists currently employed by a news organization to apply.

Application Deadline: October 07, 2025

Stories about traveling are some of the oldest tales in human history, and we’re looking for the next generation of travel writers.

We seek first-hand travel stories and bizarre yet captivating stories about your adventures. We are also open to breaking news articles from the travel industry and the changing tides that affect travelers around the world.

Please read through all of the rules and guides below. If you’re pitching for a special project, please state that in your pitch form below as well.

Rules

Please only submit one idea per Google Form entry.

Mention any sources (including any interviews) you would potentially use in this article, especially any first-hand experience.

Please include a bit about your writing and travel background. We want to know why you’re qualified to tell this story specifically.

We are open to listicles, but please keep the number below 10 items and have detailed paragraphs for each bullet point.

Please don’t pitch us completed articles but instead ideas and plans.

How to Pitch:

Please fill out the form below with as much information as possible about your story and pitch. We will review the pitches each week, and will attempt to respond to most pitches, but please note that due to volume, we may not be able to respond to all of them.

If your pitch is accepted, an editor will reach out to you to discuss the details of your pitch and the expected timeline of your article.

Rates:

Starting rates are around $250 for 700 to 900-word articles.

Special Projects:

Like a Local

Who knows a city better than the locals? We’re looking for articles and stories about the best of the best in your city or location. If you were to plan an entire itinerary for your friends who have never been to the city, where would you take them? What bars and restaurants would you bring them to? What are your can’t-miss stops?

Budget Travel

Are you the master at scoring cheap vacations and trips? Do you have secret strategies that others should know about before they hop on their next flight? We want you to share your budget travel expertise with us and our readers so everyone can be as savvy as you!

Travel Mistakes

We all learn from our mistakes, right? How about letting other travelers learn from your own? From missing flights to unexpected baggage fees to booking the wrong rental car, we’ve all made traveling mistakes that we’ve gleaned wisdom from and were able to never repeat. Let your mistakes be a cautionary tale for someone else.

Timely Stories

We’re also looking for any story related to an upcoming holiday, event, or timely situation. For example, leaf peeping in the fall, holiday lights in the winter, and the best locations to spot the Northern Lights!

Submission would need to be before the end of October, and the fee is £150. Pitches should be sent to emma@jrnymag.com by EOP Monday 23 September. Please include the words “PITCH: NWT” in your email subject, detail your possible angle and experience of the Northwest Territories, and provide links to previous work if we haven't worked with you before. Please note that at this stage we're only looking for NWT pitches: please do not email with pitches for other destinations.

Hello all! Are you a travel writer or aspiring writer with proven written talent?

Do you have good or extensive knowledge of Quebec’s province as a tourist/traveller or local?

The recent Chasing Poutine platform is looking for contributors in all regions of the province (must be local or be extremely knowledgeable with on-site info) to join the site as writers and contributors of quality non-AI travel content filled with cool places, tips, and tricks!

Training, coaching and feedback will always be provided, helping you perfect your writing/Web/WordPress/SEO/social media knowledge or other aspects you are looking to enhance.

This is why this opportunity is great for developing writers, as the articles will only be paid between 75 and 100$ per article at the moment, with a promised increase as revenue increases, but you’ll receive this coaching to help you out in form of time in addition to that. I am conscious that this is not an impressive paycheck, which is why I prefer to be honest off the bat and know that more experience writers may not respond, but please be certain I am looking for a win-win collaboration and I value well-paid endeavours, which is what I aim to do. In previous projects, I’ve always managed to bring payment to over-market-value within a certain time period and I hope to do as much here. It's also a great opportunity for writers looking to publish to participate in awards as well.

You’d love to become a Chasing Poutine contributor or want to learn more?

Send me an email to jennifer@chasingpoutine.ca with this info:

  • Who you are in a few words, what you generally write or any experience if you have

  • Where you’re based

  • What knowledge of Quebec’s regions you have

Thanks!

Application Deadline: May 01, 2024

Job Type: Freelance
