We are seeking an Senior Editor, Accountability to help steer our environmental justice coverage and investigative work. We’re looking for someone with stellar news judgment, a passion for storytelling, and a deep commitment to impactful journalism.
The editor will oversee a team of 2-4 reporters, guiding them from pitch-to-publish on stories at the intersection of the environment, climate, social justice, and accountability. The right person for this job will have great project management, outstanding story editing chops, superb communication and problem-solving skills, expert reporting judgment, and the ability to think creatively about story presentation during the edit process. Prior experience working on or editing investigations and data-heavy projects is a plus, but the most successful person for this role will ensure that our accountability coverage continues to have a human and equity lens.
What does this role look like in practice? You’ll contribute to the daily and weekly Grist site by editing stories from your reporting team, ranging from roughly 600 words to a few thousand. You will also lead a handful of enterprise, in-depth, or investigative projects per year. Grist is a small, highly collaborative team, so you may be asked to occasionally provide gut checks or top edits on larger projects, oversee other reporters temporarily while colleagues are on vacation, and represent Grist at conferences and workshops.
The annual base pay for this position is between $90,000 - $130,000, commensurate with experience. Grist is based in Seattle, but the job doesn’t have to be. We have staff around the country. This position is represented by Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild Local 37082 (“Grist NewsGuild”).
