SAD Mag has a mandate to support emerging writers and artists based in B.C., with an emphasis on stories and works from underrepresented voices. We especially encourage pitches from LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and people with disabilities. Submissions are welcome from those who have never been published before, or who are in the early stages of their careers—editorial support will be provided.

Print and Web
Our print issues are published twice a year with themes and submission deadlines that are announced beforehand on our Instagram and here. Follow us @sadmagazine to stay updated. Please note if submissions are open or closed below.

Our website features regular content. Submissions are always open. We look forward to receiving your work!

More information on submission guidelines and how to submit to print and web below. Please note that print and web submissions are separate with different directions.

$$$
Paying contributors is important to us. We value your work and do our best to reduce financial barriers to submitting. Having said that, SAD is a volunteer-run nonprofit and much of our budget is grant-dependent. As such, our rates tend to fluctuate. Depending on the word length, writing submissions for each print issue will range from $100-300, and depending on the size and placement, art submissions will range from $70-500. For web submissions, see details below.

You've reached the pitch form for both HuffPost Family and Relationships. Here's the place to pitch each of your stories (please do not email!) — try to give a sample headline, some insight into your angle, sourcing and anything else that shows why this pitch is perfect for us. If your pitch is selected, you'll hear back from us via email and we'll chat about the details/rates. Please refrain from simultaneous submissions.

Due to the large volume of pitches we receive, we aren't able to get back to everyone. If you haven't heard from us within 3-4 weeks, you can assume we're passing this time around and can resume pitching elsewhere.

We are looking for feature or explanatory articles of 1500-2000 words long, which have to be original and have never been published in any other publication before.

Pitches should be sent to pitches @ newnaratif.com, and they should contain a working title, with an accompanying paragraph of at least 100 words in length, containing:

  • What this article is going to be about
  • Who/which individual or community in Southeast Asia would relate to this article
  • Where/when (e.g. the location/time period of) the events/phenomenon elaborated in the article takes place

  • How will this article be written (e.g. Literary research? Interview? Location visit? Survey? FGD? etc.)

Send in your pitch to the above email with the following subject format: [Theme]_PITCH.

Every month, New Naratif invites writers to send pitches under a special theme. So, look out for the announcement of the theme of the month!

Writers should be able to finish the article in two weeks time, and to stand by for at least a week afterwards for the editing process. Published articles will be paid a fee of USD 150~200 depending on word count.

Open Themes

Feeling an itch to send a pitch but your idea does not fit with the theme of the month? Don’t worry! New Naratif is always open to pitches for articles outside of the monthly theme, as long as they fall within the theme umbrella below:

  • Democracy (including but not limited to: law and policy making, politics in SEA, elections, etc.)
  • Migration (including but not limited to: statelessness, forced displacement, migrant workers, etc.)
  • Gender (including but not limited to: queer experience, feminism, LGBTQ+ struggles, sexual/gendered violence, etc.)
  • Environment

  • Press freedom
  • Race and ethnicity
  • Welfare (including but not limited to: economy, healthcare, housing, etc.)
  • SEA history (including but not limited to: historical events in a Southeast Asian country, important figures in a nation’s history, folktale discussions, etc.)

Potential pitches will be shelved to wait for a time when the theme occurs in our calendar, or slotted in our publications schedule should there be a spot available!

THE AUDACITY, my newsletter, features an emerging writer twice a month. I define emerging writer as someone with fewer than three article/essay/short story publications and no published books or book contracts.

Please submit your best nonfiction and nonfiction only. I am interested in literary essays and memoir. Please submit only one essay at a time. Essays should be between 1500 and 3000 words. We may take up to eight weeks to respond but we will respond to all submissions.

All essays are paid a flat fee of $1,500.

Submissions will only be accepted at https://gay.submittable.com/.

I am interested in thoughtful essays, beautiful, intelligent writing, deep explorations, timelessness, and challenging conventional thinking without being cheap and lazy. I am interested in provocative work but we are not interested in senseless provocation. You don't have to cannibalize yourself to tell a compelling story. The essays in Unruly Bodies or that I have preciously published in The Audacity might give you a sense of what I like but I am always open to being surprised. I am not looking to publish anew what I've already published.

Again, I am only interested in nonfiction, which is to say no poetry, fiction, or anything else that is not nonfiction. I cannot stress this enough. I am only interested in nonfiction for the Emerging Writer Series.
